The most popular sandstone rock town in the Bohemian Paradise is situated about 10 km northwest from Jicin and near 60 km from Prague.

You can rent a car in the center of Prague in RUNWELL and go to this part of Bohemian Paradise.

Heavily segmented plateau was created of sandstones sediments, marlites and arenaceous marls during the Mesozoic era.

The rock town was created through eroding of the originally compact table of rectangulary shaped sandstones of the latest chalk period with charakteristic basaltic places: Svincice (415 meters), Velke Hury (458 meters) and Privysiny (464 meters).

There is a thick net of touristic marked paths leading through the cloughs fringed with sandstone walls (Certova kuchyne - Devil´s kitchen, Cisarska chodba - Emperor´s corridor, Na vodach, Na stajich, Tocenice) and to beautiful viewpoints (Peveckeho sboru Krizovsky, Pechova, Ceskeho raje, Miru, Leparova, Hakenova, Hlaholka, and others).

Visitors can enter the Prachov rocks area at several places. If you hered the car by RUNWELL, you'd do just as well to continue on another mile to the Turistická chata (hikers' lodge).

Detailed hiking maps are available at the each entrance to the rocks (and every bookstore in Jičín or Turnov), but there are also thorough information boards near each entrance and signposts at regular intervals along the trails.

The geological history of the Prachovské Skály area is rather varicoloured – the beginnings of the sandstone formations date back to the Mesozoic era when the whole territory was flooded with sea water.

Some time in the mid 13th century, King Přemysl Otakar I. founded on the basalt hill a magnificent castle named Velíš and the Prachovské Skály became a part of the Royal demesne of Velíš. The demesne was not the Royal property for long: in 1337 it was obtained by the Vartemberk family and then it was possessed by various other noble families.
