Hitting the road with your kids is usually the most cost-efficient way to travel. But all that time cooped up in a car can make any toddler as wild monkey! We have some ideas how to improve your trip with child by car.

What activities and toys should you tote? Finger and hand puppets are perfect, as are crayons and books, and miniature music-making toys.

Tweak your schedule to encourage sleep on the go. Try leaving really early in the morning, or late at night, so your tot will sleep through part of the journey.

Souvenir Ornament
Nice and clever way to savor vacation memories. Try to preserve small mementos from each trip, such as ticket stubs and nature finds, in an inexpensive, clear plastic ornament ball or an glass box, or an fotoframe.

Creative outlets

White board and dry-erase pens: Kids can draw, play tic-tac-toe and hangman, or write notes to each other.

Magnetized letters, numbers, and shapes: You can buy sets that come with a magnetized playing surface and plenty of fun magnets to manipulate.

Sticker and activity books: Extra great for toddlers.

Crayons or markers: Markers are best for kids 3 and up, crayons for kids under 3.

A trip notebook: A great way to capture memories of your family's road trip. Your child can draw and place stickers en route, and you can help by adding a few notes about the trip at the end of the day.

Snack or candy necklaces. Take some strands of yarn (long enough to make a necklace) or licorice strings. Let your kids put anything edible that has a hole in the center (cereal, candy, etc.) on the string. When done, they’re fun to eat and it helps the time fly by!
