karlstejn

Located close to Prague is the most famous Czech castle, Karlstejn. Czech King and Roman Emperor Charles IV to house and protect the Royal Coronation Jewels and his collection of holy relics built this magnificent high Gothic fortress, founded in 1348. After 1480 the castle was reconstructed in the late Gothic style and in the Renaissance style in the late 16th century. The present day neo Gothic appearance of the castle is the work of architect Josef Mocker from the end of the 19th century. A major stop on every tourist path, Karlstejn is overcrowded and overrun by people in the summer, but is definitely worth pushing past the hoards of people to see this Gothic castle gem. Overlooking a quaint village with souvenir shops and traditional Czech restaurants, Karlstejn looms over the surrounding area in a most majestic way, commanding your attention and awe. The surrounding countryside is most splendid as well, with lush green forests offering many hiking trails, natural caves, the winding Berounka River and much more, not to mention other castles close by!

Konopiste (Route 50 km from Prague)

konopiste

Konopiste, originally founded at the end of the 13th century, was built as a Gothic fortress overlooking and guarding the nearby village of Benesov. The chateau’s founder, Tobias of Benesov had the structure modeled after French castles at the time. In his Konopiste chateau he installed electricity, thus making Konopiste a modern livable Chateau. The heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne bought the chateau from the Lobkowicz family in 1887 and converted it into a royal residence fit for a soon to be king. Franz Ferdinand d’Este had the chambers richly decorated with family collections and with his own hunting trophies as he first and foremost used the chateau as a royal hunting lodge. His passion for hunting is evident in the royal game hall, a long corridor full of animal trophies ranging from the forests of Central Europe with wild boars and deer to the more exotic large cats. The chateau also offers an exhibition showcasing one of the largest collections of St. George artwork, a pretty rose garden and the chateau park with landscaped grounds and a large pond, a shooting range and much more.

Trosky (Route 100 km from Prague)

 trosky1

Situated in the center of Český ráj (Czech Paradise) and overlooking the gorgeous rocky and lush green landscape is the ruin of Trosky Castle. The symbol of Czech Paradise, the castle features two towers, aptly named Baby and Panna, or Grandma and Maiden. The grand castle ruin stands tall and proud atop two basalt volcanic plugs that stand quite high from the bottom of the hill, which made the castle once impregnable. Due to fire and war however the structure is now a grand ruin, and how grand it is, as you will witness its admirable power as it captures and steals the spotlight from the natural rock paradise that surrounds it. The area of the Czech Paradise is extremely popular with hikers, cyclists and romantics and of course, lovers of castles, especially romantic castle ruins. Trosky Castle is one of the Czech Republic’s most famous castles and is a sight to behold; do not miss it!

Kost (Route 80 km from Prague)

kost

In the protected area of Cesky Raj located about an hour northeast of Prague you will find magical castles and ruins, natural wonders such as rock cities and rock quarries containing semi precious stones and much more. Tucked away in the thick forest is the Kost Castle, or the Bone Castle. Kost Castle is the best-preserved Gothic castle in the Czech Republic. The castle remained untouched throughout the years, protecting its Gothic charm and atmosphere. Kost underwent a meticulous renovation in the 1950s. The hidden castle is located in a valley surrounded by dense forest, unlike most castles in Bohemia that are situated on hills. The large White Tower has a trapezoid like plan, another unique feature of this massive castle. Kost Castle and the surrounding countryside are definitely worth a trip from Prague. You can choose between two tours of the castle: one is devoted to the Kinsky family (current owners) and the main interiors including the famous kitchen, while the other tour concentrates on torture devices and criminal law of the 16th-18th centuries, plus the White Tower.
